A power sports radio listener won $10,000 in the NextRadio Extreme Cash Contest. Duane R was awarded the cash Friday, February 3, 2017 in the Detroit studios of his favorite station – 97.1 The Ticket (CBS Station WXYT).

Duane listens to 97.1 The Ticket on the NextRadio app every day while working. And he’s in good company. Sports radio is the #2 top format listened to in the app based on TSL, which currently averages 45.3 minutes. And more NextRadio app listeners (6.7%) tune to sports than the industry widely reports (4.7%).

Sports radio listener cites programming, battery savings, sound quality

Duane talked briefly with TagStation after being handed the check by our VP of Automotive Business Development Derek Rohloff and on-air talent from 97.1 The Ticket.

“It’s a good quality of broadcast,” said Duane. “And listening doesn’t drain my phone battery.” An avid Detroit Lions fan who tunes to his local radio station daily, Duane entered the contest only once. In a nice stroke of luck, the day we called to say congrats on winning $10,000 was his birthday.

National NextRadio spots drive 166,445 giveaway entries

How did our cash winner learn about the NextRadio app? From a radio spot, of course. So we’d like to say “thank you” to our many broadcast partners who advertised the giveaway during Q4 2016, resulting in 166,445 entries.

Contesting certainly gets the app – and local station broadcasts – directly into the hands of listeners. But some stations are reaping the benefits of a more concerted effort. One local sports station, for instance, added on-air mentions and social content to the turnkey NextRadio campaign and saw a 52% increase in its NFL game listening.
